Music Curriculum Overview
At our school, music is a vibrant and inclusive subject that enables all pupils to develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music. Our curriculum, is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6, ensuring clear progression in musical knowledge, skills and vocabulary.
Children begin by exploring rhythm, movement and singing through familiar songs and play-based experiences, before building towards performing, composing and appraising a wide range of musical styles. Across Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils develop their understanding of key musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics, applying these through singing, instrumental work and composition.
Music is taught through a combination of high-quality curriculum resources and practical experiences, including whole-class ensemble teaching and regular opportunities to perform. In Year 4, pupils benefit from specialist instrumental teaching through external partnerships, including support from Bradford Music & Arts Service, enabling them to learn an instrument and perform as part of an ensemble.
The curriculum is designed to be inclusive and culturally rich, exposing pupils to a diverse range of genres and traditions while promoting self-expression, creativity and collaboration. In addition to this, pupils have the opportunity to take part in school choir, developing their vocal skills, teamwork and confidence in performing to an audience. Singing is embedded throughout the curriculum, with all pupils encouraged to find and use their voice. Our children regularly perform in front of peers, parents and the wider community. This includes class assemblies, seasonal productions and events such as Christmas concerts, where pupils showcase their musical learning through singing, instrumental performance and drama.
